Congress issues 1-month delay on hemp-derived product restrictions

Congress’ passage of a short-term government funding measure that includes a one-month delay of federal restrictions on certain hemp-derived THC products, has moved the implementation date from Nov. 12 to Dec. 11. The measure will now head to President Trump for his signature. The reprieve will help the hemp industry and businesses selling hemp-derived THC products, including beverages, to address the issue of hemp-derived cannabinoid products, which emerged following passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.

While the delay provides some short-term certainty for the marketplace, significant uncertainty remains regarding how the products will ultimately be regulated. The National Restaurant Association’s policy team will continue monitoring the federal activity, engage with policymakers, and advocate for policies providing clarity and flexibility for restaurant operators.

A new trade war with Canada — Connecticut’s top export market, continued hostilities in Iran keeping oil prices elevated, and the rising cost of capital as the U.S. national debt surpasses $40 trillion will be drags on growth.
